Malachi Mart's mission is to: be a ministering presence in the neighborhood; provide quality goods at a reasonable cost to area residents; be a permanent source of financial support to St. Malachi Center and its mission; and assist St. Malachi Center in providing participants with opportunities for job training. The Malachi Mart Ministry began to take shape after the final theater production which had served as a fundraiser for the St. Malachi Center. Malachi Mart was now to become a permanent fund raising program for the Center. With a startup loan from the Center, work progressed through the summer of 1990. The Mart opened its doors for business in October 1990 as a general retail store selling non-perishable groceries and new variety items. All this was made possible with the cooperation, generosity and hard work of many St. Malachi parishioners and Community members as well as others with commitment to the concept of community. We have become a valuable asset to area businesses through our service as a work readiness site. Starting with St. Malachi Center's job readiness program, Steps to Success, the Mart has partnered with other local, city and county organizations to teach valuable skills to people of all ages seeking employment. Learn more about our job training programs here. In the past few years, as a result of the business plan completed in 2004, Malachi Mart has continued to expand its services to the community. We are now eligible to accept the Ohio Direction Card (a.k.a. "food stamps"), Visa, Mastercard and Discover. Two large fridges now allow the Mart to stock perishable food items. Malachi Mart's dedicated staff and volunteer committee members are currently working on a new business plan to refine how we can fulfill our mission and better serve our customers. Although the Mart is growing through collaboration and innovation, it will allows remain the place where you save more than you spend. |
